One February 2, 1947 an explosion in the furnace at the Valdez Community Hospital started a fire that threatened to wipe out a large portion of the city. This fire which took place in a 20 MPH wind it eventually destroyed the entire hospital as well as the lodge rooms of the Masonic order. The fire then jumped to a children’s orphanage, which was ultimately destroyed. In addition to Firefighter Jack Crawford, one hospital patient died in the blaze; 43 children and 8 missionary workers were rescued.

 

During the 2017 September 11thFirefighter Memorial ceremony Firefighter Crawford was recognized and remembered. Placing his plaque on the wall and reminding us all that he will Never Be Forgotten were:
