The Coast Guard Base in Kodiak was undergoing a significant amount of construction during the summer and fall of 1976. As such response routings for emergencies of the base were different than normal.
On October 24, 1976 the Fire Department was forced to respond on a fire following a different route than normal. While responding to this incident a vehicle accident occurred with the responding fire truck. Firefighter Frank Cannon died in the line of duty in this accident. In his home station in Kodiak, at the Coast Guard Base, has been remembered every year on that anniversary of his death. He is also be remembered on the walls of the Alaska Fallen Firefighter Memorial.
During the 2016 September 11th Firefighter Memorial ceremony Firefighter Cannon was recognized and remembered. Current members of the US Coast Guard Fire Department assisted in placing his plaque on the wall and reminding us all that he will Never Be Forgotten were:
